West Bengal Chief Minister (CM) Mamata Banerjee has announced a new taxi service called Pink Taxi Service. These taxis will be driven exclusively by women. However, both female and male passengers can hire the taxis.

To make it easier for women to become the owners, under the Gatidhara Scheme, they will get a subsidy of Rs 1.5 lakh, instead of the Rs 1 lakh for other cars. That is, Rs 1.5 lakh of the cost of the car would be given by the State Government.

This was announced by Ms. Banerjee earlier this week in her speech at the inauguration of the service at Nabanna. She also said that the government plans to enable the introduction of 1,000 such taxis in Kolkata.

“My heartiest congratulations to the sisters for taking up the steering in their own hands for pink cab service. We have taken decision to enhance subsidy under our Gatidhara scheme for women entrepreneurs for pink cabs,” Ms. Banerjee tweeted.

With the introduction of pink cab service, the State Government plans to empower women by making them self-employed. According to the government, more than 36,000 youths have already been provided subsidy under the Gatidhara Scheme.
