The election for the Punjab Legislative Assembly will be held on February 4, 2017. At present Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance has a majority in the 117-seat Vidhan Sabha. The government is headed by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.

The other major political parties in the state are Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
