President and Mrs. Carter, joined by Habitat for Humanity CEO Jonathan Reckford and hundreds of volunteers, gathered in Atlanta to kick off the 28th annual Habitat for Humanity Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project.
President and Mrs. Carter along with the volunteers will be in Haiti where they will build 100 homes in partnership with earthquake-affected families.
The 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010 caused widespread devastation, destroying 105,000 homes and damaging many more.
[ Also Read: Honeywell Opens School in Quake-Hit Haiti ]Habitat’s Carter Work Project will be in Haiti in 2011 and 2012 to build homes and raise awareness of the need for ongoing support for Haiti’s recovery.
Since 1984, President and Mrs. Carter have spent one week each year volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and building homes around the world.
Habitat for Humanity International is a global nonprofit Christian housing organization. Since 1976, Habitat has served more than 500,000 families by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions.
