The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg will begin welcoming the public inside its premises on a regular basis next month. Under a new program called “A Court open to all,” visitors can enter the building on the first Friday of each month to learn about the Court’s work, history, and distinctive architecture.

The initiative is designed to give ordinary citizens a clearer picture of how the Court handles individual applications, delivers judgments, and contributes to the protection of fundamental rights across Europe. Guests will also be able to tour key areas of the landmark building designed by British architect Richard Rogers, including courtrooms where major cases have been heard, and learn about the symbolism embedded in its design. A special exhibition marking the 75th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights will be on display during the open days.

Court President Mattias Guyomar and Registrar Marialena Tsirli launched the program alongside Strasbourg Mayor Catherine Trautmann. The mayor described the decision to open the doors as a meaningful reminder that human rights and the rule of law belong to everyone, not just legal professionals. She noted that the Court has helped establish Strasbourg’s reputation as Europe’s human-rights capital over more than six decades.

Founded in 1959, the European Court of Human Rights oversees compliance with the Convention for roughly 700 million people in 46 countries. Individuals who have exhausted domestic remedies can apply directly to the Court if they believe their rights under the Convention have been violated. The new monthly open days form part of a broader effort to make the institution more transparent and accessible.
