The Nirav Modi banking scam has become a hot potato issue in the Indian politics. In a slew of fresh allegations, the opposition political party Congress said Saturday that Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi is personally responsible for the scam as the accused Nirav Modi was closely associated with PM Modi.

Congress has called Nirav Modi – who is absconding – Chhota Modi (younger Modi) indicating that the accused is related to PM Modi, although the true relationship between the two Modis is not yet known.

It is stated to be the biggest fraud in the country, perpetrated on Punjab National Bank (PNB) by jewellery merchant Nirav Modi who defrauded the bank of ₹21,306 crore (approximately US$ 3 billion) while this estimate is changing as the case is being investigated.

Congress suggests that a scam of this scale could not have taken place without connivance at the highest levels of government.

“The Prime Minister through his actions has destroyed the financial system of this country. He has taken money from people’s pockets and put it into the banking sector. And now his friends and cronies are stealing it from the banking sector,” said Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

“Instead of spending an hour and a half explaining to little kids how to take exams he should explain to the people of India what is going to be done to this Nirav Modi and what he is going to do to make sure that the banking system is safe,” Rahul Gandhi said referring to PM Modi’s utterly useless interaction with school children.

Congress says that under the Modi government, rules only apply to ordinary citizens. “If you are Mehul Bhai (who is also involved in the scam) or Chhota Modi, you can rob a bank and flee the country. No questions asked,” Congress said.

“All we’ve seen until now is lying and finger-pointing by 3 ministers of the Modi government without any real answers on India’s largest bank loot. The Modi government must stop deceiving the nation,” Congress said.
