Have You Seen the Worst Kitchen in America?

Who has the worst kitchen in America? DIY Network, the go-to destination for home improvement television, and Food Network Magazine, an epicurean title on the newsstand, teamed up for the second year to find out.

This past summer more than 15,500 photos and videos were submitted by home cooks explaining why their kitchen was cramping their style and in need of a complete overhaul.

Charlotte, N.C., homeowner and US Airways flight attendant Alan Young’s congested and appliance-troubled kitchen was ultimately decided as the worst in America.

On Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 9 p.m. ET, DIY Network will feature the eye-popping kitchen makeover during a one-hour special, “Worst Kitchen in America,” hosted by licensed contractor Matt Blashaw.

Young, a passionate cook, was never able to entertain as his kitchen had no counter space and only two functioning burners. Not only was the flight attendant unable to renovate the space because of his limited time at home and a recent pay cut, his residence had also been vandalized.

Despite it all, Young’s friends attest that he always puts others before himself, including giving his own furniture to a close friend who was going through a divorce.

In the one-hour special, Matt and his trailblazing team tear down Young’s entire kitchen and carve out the perfect space for the hardworking flight attendant to cook and entertain friends.

Incorporating Young’s eclectic and modern style, and love of travel, the team creates a brand new modern kitchen decked out with the hottest amenities, including granite and glass composite countertops, floating shelving and stainless steel appliances.

In addition to the one-hour special, the build is featured in the January/February 2012 issue of Food Network Magazine, available on newsstands now.

As a “Worst Kitchen in America” title holder, Young also received a trip for two to attend the New York City Wine & Food Festival, including a meet-and-greet with Food Network host Chef Anne Burrell.
