Kenyan PM on Social Development Agenda

Raila Amolo Odinga, Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya, has implored the EAC (East African Community) region to develop a coordinated approach for its social development agenda in order to improve the quality of life for East Africans.

Opening the 3rd Meeting of the Forum of EAC Ministers responsible for Social Development in Nairobi, the Prime Minister in a speech read by his Deputy and Minister for Local Government, Musalia Mudavadi, said with a strong regional market, the region’s concerted efforts will promote and facilitate measures aimed at eradicating poverty, improving the quality of life of the people and promoting sustainable utilization and management of natural resources.

“I appeal that we should all remain steadfast in pooling our efforts together towards the realization of a fully integrated EAC.

“Without a strong sense of purpose and unbending unity, we cannot effectively compete in today’s dynamic and competitive global scene,” the Prime Minister told the Forum that brought together regional policy makers and experts to address vital aspects of the integration and social development.

The Forum aims to critically review, design and adopt roadmaps and strategies that will positively impact on the entire citizenry of East Africa.

Among the items up for discussion is the draft Social Development Framework whose main pillars are: Health and Medical Services; Education, Science and Technology, Sports and Culture; Gender, Youth, Children, Social Protection and Community Development and; Environment and Natural Resources

The Prime Minister noted that the region was grappling with issues of low literacy levels, water scarcity, inadequate housing, and issues of environmental conservation among others.

“This Forum therefore provides a critical avenue for us to brainstorm and interrogate our policies, strategies and programmes and ensure high impact solutions,” affirmed the Premier.
