Congress has demanded the restoration of Special Protection Group (SPG) security for the Gandhi family and former Prime Minister (PM) of India Manmohan Singh.

The Assam unit of Congress said today that it has also submitted a memorandum to the President of India to provide SPG cover to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi, and daughter Priyanka Gandhi after their SPG protection was withdrawn on November 8 by the Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s government.

While the government has replaced SPG with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Congress has accused the Modi government of personal vendetta and endangering the life of senior Congress leaders.

The SPG – which is the premier security agency in India – was providing the security to the Gandhi family because two of their family members and former PMs – Indira Gandhi and her son Rajiv Gandhi – were assassinated.

Now, nearly 3,000 personnel of SPG will provide security to PM Modi only.
