The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in India has issued notices on Wednesday to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, West Bengal in a gang rape case.

According to NHRC, a 71 year old nun was raped by a gang of seven dacoits inside a Convent in Gangnapur village of Nadia district in West Bengal on Saturday.

The victim along with another nun tried to thwart the robbery attempt on the premises of the Convent. However, the dacoits tied up the other nun and raped the victim in front of her. They also escaped with over Rs. 10 lakh in cash.

The Commission has observed that if the report of rape is true, it amounts to serious violation of human rights of the victim. It has given two weeks to the West Bengal government to submit its report.
