Gluten Free, All Natural Croutons for Your Salad

Tropical Foods, a food manufacturer that specializes in raw and roasted nuts, dried fruit and snack mixes, has launched a new addition to its My Salad Bar line with gluten free, all natural croutons.

The croutons come with the flavors of Honey Mustard or Italian, and are low calorie, fat free, cholesterol free and have very low sodium, says the company.

My Salad Bar gluten free croutons are made of rice. Tropical will use the industry accepted ELISA Testing Method and will routinely test to ensure there is less than 20 parts per million gluten.

Gluten intolerance, which is a type of food allergy, is becoming more common as more people are developing sensitivities to gluten. Wheat allergy in the form of celiac disease is the body’s inability to handle wheat and sometimes other grains containing gluten.

Celiac disease is one of the most common chronic health disorders and also one of the most under-diagnosed. It affects at least 3 million Americans or about one in every 133 Americans, although only 40,000 to 60,000 have been diagnosed, informs Tropical Foods.

If food allergy testing uncovers celiac disease, wheat allergies or gluten intolerance, the only option is a gluten free diet, the company suggests.

“Gluten causes some people serious health problems. Our new gluten free croutons will help these people enjoy the flavor without the gluten health hazards,” said Chad Hartman, brand manager for Tropical Foods.

The gluten free food industry has boomed, with an average annual growth rate of 28 percent since 2004, according to market research organization, Packaged Facts – quotes Tropical Foods.

It further says marketers estimate that 15% to 25% of consumers want gluten free foods — though doctors estimate just 1% has celiac disease. The remaining percentage enjoys the health benefits of eating a gluten free diet.

Privately-owned, Tropical is headquartered in Charlotte, NC, with additional operating centers in Atlanta, Memphis, Washington DC and Dallas.
